About Me
The Power and Purpose of Illustration
Illustration serves a purpose greater than merely giving the reader a pretty picture to look at.
Artwork on a page breaks up all that lettering, which if just sitting there by itself in its' densely packed columns and rows can be a daunting challenge.
Art makes things easier to read.
It can be the first thing to draw your eye in.
It can also give you an idea of what an article is about before you decide to read on. The brain will say: "Hmmm, what's this article about? OK, I've read the title, but can I find out some more? Oh, I'll look at the illustration... oh, ok, that tells me I think I'm gonna like what this is about!"
Kids' Books
3 children's books published so far. They were written by other people, so now I'm working on a few of my own - watch this space (and the newsblog) for news.
Here's some of my child friendly artwork
Sketchbook
Flick through my sketchbook. Get an idea of what I love to draw.
You'll notice I love to travel and scribble at the same time.
Sculpture
Sometimes I go 3D.
Not much to show just now - more to follow in the near future.
For Sale
Some of the things I draw and make are for sale.
If there's something you like, get in touch and I'll bubblewrap it carefully and post it off to you.
I'll get a website shop at some point, with Paypal, fancy bells and whistles, but until then feel free to email me and ask me in person.
Clients & Commissions
To name but a few:
- Graphics Company
- The Big Issue Scotland
- Sunday Herald
How I Work
I listen to your requirements.
We discuss ideas.
Once project outline is agreed I issue a license that explains the job, fee, and my terms.
I produce a draft or initial sketched idea.
You give me the go ahead or ask for a tweak.
Either way, I get to work.
Delivery can be digitally, via email or by post. Usually I'll put everything onto a CD or DVD too.
I will keep in touch re the progress of the job as best as I can - especially if time is ticking.
Rates
Really depends on the job and a conversation to negociate is usually the way to kick things off. It would help if you have some idea of how you want to use the artwork (Advertising? Website? T-Shirt? Leaflet? Brochure? Side of a bus? Global campaign? Magazine? Book? That kind of thing.)
Also good to know: Colour or B/W? Style required? (I have several. Take your pick.)
As a guide if it's a smallish and simple job you're looking at £30 per hour. A larger job (or very tight deadline) and I'll have to consider the research required, materials needing sourced, meetings to attend... and so on.
Re-Agreeing
If there are changes required after we agree on an agreed fee for the agreed job, then I may have to reconsider the quote.
Cancellation rates are at half the original quote unless very late into the job, in which case I refer you to my terms.
